Dazzling Cafe, Singapore

IMG_5881.JPG

This cafe’s soft opening on 18th April started with a long queue. I’m not sure about the first day but now they have a queue ticket system. A few days later, my friends and I thought the queue will continue but we were lucky we manage to get to a table on a Monday evening. (Note: For soft opening, they will be open at 11am – 8pm from18 April – 6 June).

IMG_5880.JPG

Most of the shops around this cafe are yet to open. So currently there is less light from the building but if you take the seats inside, it’s better.

Their signature design that would capture many photo takers is the rabbit ear chairs. Not all tables have that chair but you get it, you’re lucky. Otherwise like us, unfortunately not so lucky. Sorry no photo.

I knew about this cafe when I visited the shop in Taipei. Their main dishes are the desserts. So let’s start with them.

IMG_5878.JPG

Matcha with Azuki Beans Honey Toast (S$19.90)

One of their top dessert (from Taiwan’s top list) is Honey Toast. You get to choose how your toast would be made; soft, regular or crispy. We chose crispy. The crispy toast is served on green tea purée topped with green tea ice cream and Azuki beans covered with a layer of cream and green tea drizzle while finished with a green tea macaron, green tea almond crisps and a few cranberries. Yes, you can see that I have repeated “green tea” multiple times. You will need to really love green tea to enjoy this dessert because its matcha taste is very strong. For me, I am overwhelmed by it. As for the toast, recommended to eat it while freshly made. It will gradually lose its crisp to the ice cream and air. What I like of this dessert is although it’s covered by a layer of cream, the cream does not leave an oily after taste.

IMG_5876.JPG

Valrhona Chocolate Waffle (S$12.90), additional Mochi topping (S$2.00) and Bailey’s or Chocolate ice cream (S$2.50)

I look forward to trying this waffle since I missed my chance when I was in Taipei. Flower waffle sandwiched with mochi, topped with cream, chocolate chips, Valrhona chocolate drizzle and Bailey’s ice cream. Accompanying at the side with maple syrup. Valrhona is a premium French chocolate brand, if you’re wondering what it is. It’s enjoying to munch with chewy mochi and Bailey’s ice cream. Its chocolate is not sweet if you have sweet tooth but I liked it. What I least expected but I don’t know if it’s meant to be that way is the waffle is not crispy and aromatic enough on its own. So I suggest that you should eat all ingredients together and it’s still an enjoyable dessert.

Okay, let’s come back to some of their appetizer and main dishes. It’s nothing too fancy but it serves rather good ingredients.

Mentaiko Spaghetti in Cream Sauce (S$18.90) – chef’s recommendation

It’s a simple dish of spaghetti with cod roe in white wine cream sauce topped with dried seaweed flakes. Although it does not have a lot of ingredients but it’s appetizing because of the cod roe’s crunch and cream sauce’s saltiness.

IMG_5870.JPG

Buffalo Wings (S$15.90)

Mmm… Spicy spiced wings. For my poor tolerance level for spiciness, it’s a little spicy but it’s pungent taste could satisfy my taste bud. It’s a try for me.

IMG_5875.JPG

Truffle Mushroom Risotto with Freshly Shaved Truffle (S$24.90)

The only risotto on the menu but its name was quite attractive to lure us to try. As describe in the menu, mixed wild mushrooms, red onions, garlic, simmered in white wine reduction topped with fresh black truffle shavings, Parmesan cheese and truffle oil. Fragrantly cooked with pungent truffle and onion taste at every mouth.

Go for a try! or if you’re in Taipei, try it there too! ^_^

Jawbone UP24 could not sync nor pair with mobile phone

IMG_5391-1.JPG

I got this problem with my Jawbone UP24 but I could not go to any retailer as it was a gift purchased in US while I’m currently located in Singapore. So, this is what I did and you can do as well.

I contacted Jawbone support via email at support@jawbone.com.

Here are some quick troubleshooting steps that were suggested to test to know if they can fix your problem.

Troubleshoot steps 1 – Reinstall

1. Make sure that your device is connected to a network.

2. Restart your iOS device (just power it off, and then back on).

3. Quit out of all open apps, including UP.

If you’re using iOS 7:
– Double click the Home button to bring up your app cards, then swipe up on each app to force quit.

If you’re using a previous version of iOS:
-Double click your Home button to bring open the tray of all running apps.
-Press and hold on each app icon until red minus signs appear.
-Tap each red minus button to close each app.

4. Turn Bluetooth on your device off and back on.

5. Reopen the UP app. Syncing should start automatically. If it does not, press the mode button on your band to initiate a manual sync.

6. If you’re still having trouble syncing, we can try uninstalling and reinstalling the UP app. (This won’t erase any data!) To uninstall, tap and hold on any app icon until the apps start wiggling. Then, tap the X button that appears on your UP app. To reinstall, head back to the app store, search for UP by Jawbone, and download.

After you’ve reinstalled UP on your device, you’ll sign in using the email associated with your UP account. Once you’re on the home screen of the app, click Add a new band to pair with your UP24.

7. You can also try to sync your band on a friend’s device – just make sure you log in using your own UP account first! This will help us better isolate the issue, and confirm if the band can no longer sync, or if there’s a factor on the secondary device contributing to the difficulties.

8. It’s also important to make sure your band is up to date with the latest firmware, as firmware updates will often resolve a variety of issues. Please check for any available updates at www.jawbone.com/up/updater and, if applicable, follow the steps to update.

9. PLEASE NOTE: once the update completes, allow the band to charge fully until the Sun status light glows solidly, and then sync the band to your phone before removing UP24 from the charger.

If all else fails, continue to the next troubleshoot step…

Troubleshoot step 2 – Soft reset

1. Start with the UP connected to the charger, but DON’T connect the charger to a power source.

2. PRESS + HOLD the button on your UP as you plug the charger into the USB port on a well-powered computer.

3. Release the button on your UP. You will see the Sun and Moon status lights cycle back and forth, and then the Sun will begin to slowly pulse, indicating that the band is charging normally.

4. Allow the band to charge for approximately 80 minutes, until the Sun status light changes to a solid light.

5. Remove the UP from the charger – you’ll see both lights flash once off the charger.

6. Launch the UP app. Allow it to fully open, then plug in your band. The sync will start automatically. (If you’re using an iOS device or UP on an Android device, swipe to the right menu screen and touch Sync Now; if you’re using an Android device with UP24, press the mode button on your band to initial a manual sync.)

For more information about the soft reset, watch the video tutorial below or please see this link: https://jawbone.com/kb/articles/425.html

7. When pairing your band, make sure you are at least 33 feet away from any other Bluetooth device, otherwise your band will try to pair to it. Once the app finds the band then just tap the button very gently to pair.

8. If the band still does not pair then try deleting the app, power cycling the phone and re-installing the app.

9. Force close the UP app ( press the home button on your iPhone twice, a list of running apps will appear, please swipe all the apps upward towards the top of the screen to close them.

10. Power cycle your iPhone ( Press and hold the power button and the home button on the phone, keep holding them till the phone powers off, ignore the swipe to power off prompt.

11. Turn the phone back on, and re-install the UP app.

12. Sign In to the UP app.

13. Once you’re on the home screen of the app, click Add a new band to pair your UP24.

14. On the next screen, you will see Wake Up the Band. Press the button. Then click on Next.

15. On the next screen, you will see “Looking for Band”. Then, once your band is detected, you should see “Found it”.

16. As soon as you see “Press to Pair”, VERY GENTLY tap the button.

If this fails as well, the support staff will look into a warranty exchange for you to be done at your local retailers. However, I went to one of the retailer and was advised to go to the main distributor.

For the one in Singapore, head over to their service centre at the address below.

You do not need to make any appointment before heading down but you may want to check with them if they have the size and colour that you want. Initially, I was told that they only had black but subsequently got me the same colour as my original orange unit. My unit was certified dead. So, I got my warranty exchange within half hour.

Red Velvet Cupcake Baking Class @ Big Fun Kitchen, New Bridge Road

20140720-073303-27183886.jpg

A random search for baking class through Groupon deals caught my eye on Red Velvet Cupcake Baking class. I was initially attracted to the reasonable price then to what will be taught. ^_^  It was my first time attending a baking class at Big Fun Kitchen. From the many classes I attended, no expectation whatsoever.

20140720-073304-27184330.jpg

The location is convenient with easy to follow maps on their website. Either that or you can google map it yourself. The classroom is bright and clean, making anyone there feeling comfortable especially with the 2 friendly chefs, Ricky and Rick, and Cindy, the administrator (I think).

20140720-073306-27186072.jpg

All ingredients are pre-prepared and provided to us for mixing. Some ingredients are to mix from raw, some are pre-mixed for adding. Well, although everything was prepared, a recipe is given to us for reference or note taking. I like how the recipe lays out where all ingredients are in weighing measurement. This is because I feel that the difference you get from using measuring cups or spoons is more than weighing the materials.

20140720-075919-28759934.jpg20140720-075920-28760281.jpg

All we need to do is mix the ingredient from butter to batter. Step-by-step instructions will be given by Ricky. While you are busy exercising your arms, the whole team of 2RC (Both Ricky and Rick, and Cindy) will go around the class to help you out. They will confirm if your batter is ok or more work.

20140720-080437-29077725.jpg20140720-073305-27185652.jpg

The baking process is done by Rick. While the cupcakes are being baked, Ricky is all up for Q&A sessions. I find myself learning a lot from them but would also provided that you do ask your questions, whether stupid or not.

The recipe provided also comes with vanilla cupcake with salted caramel frosting. As for the vanilla cupcake, is already baked for you. What we need to do is decorate them.

20140720-073303-27183478.jpg

You can decorate with either salted caramel frosting or cream cheese frosting and some sprinkles. You don’t get to see or do the frosting but it was fun decorating. It would be nice if I could see how the frosting are mixed or prepared. Now, that would be up to your own experiment or maybe you can search on youtube.

The salted caramel frosting can shape better than the cream cheese frosting because the cream cheese melts rather fast. So, it is very important that before you use the frosting, you have to chill it for 15-30 minutes.

I had fun! Have you?

Kiat Lim Vegetarian Food, Kallang

I was being introduced to this place recently, hearing good comments of food here.

20140412-134109.jpg

It is located beside a famous Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee. From the first look, comparing to the neighbour, the shop looks quiet, with only 1 customer inside when we entered. We were welcomed by a straight looking uncle but soon become very jovial and friendly.

20140412-134118.jpg

Wolfberry soup (SGD4.00 for small)
This soup gave us a big question mark. Where is the wolfberry? You don’t see it but the soup is sweet with it, cooking with very fresh and sweet vegetables, corn, tomato and fried beancurd slices. The small portion is enough to share for 2.

20140412-134124.jpg

Fried mee sua (SGD4.50 for small)
I like this dish. It’s mee sua is just right with tasty sauce, stir-fried with at least 4 types of vegetables. The taste became more refreshing with a squeeze of lime juice.

20140412-134129.jpg

Vegetables with Bailin (SGD10.00 for small)
Bailin mushroom presented with Chinese cabbage, wolfberries and moss. Looking at the soup and then to this dish, had the wolfberries came here instead? ^_^ The mushroom is sliced very thinly making easy to eat. The Chinese cabbage is fresh and crunchy. The sauce is also nice to pour over some rice.
