The Coffee Bar, Bandar Sungai Long

IMG_7296-2

Situated at the centre of the Sungai Long prime area, near UTAR but with limited car park slots, a nice place to have coffee and food. A simple relaxing place to hangout with nice coffee. I visit this place on 2 occasions and I would be back for more!

They serve western food, mainly waffles, spaghetti, salad and other main courses. I find some of the descriptions on the dishes hilarious, introducing the food with a little touch of excitement and “obvious, right?”. Or maybe it depends on your tone when you’re reading it. ^^

Just one particular note, I noticed that some of the tables were not level (coffee may flow out a little) and some chairs were shaky. Just becareful.

Vanilla Latte (RM10.90)

I would love to recommend trying their Latte. I was taken by surprised of the smoothness of the froth milk which brought to me a satisfaction of having this cup of latte. Of course the strength of the coffee was also to my liking at it was not too strong but yet there is a nice coffee taste, although mine has a dash of vanilla syrup. You can rehydrate from your coffee with free plain water served.

IMG_7232

The Honey Bee Waffle (RM12.90)

Waffles! On the first page of the menu. You can have it sweet or savoury, we went for the sweet one.

At first cut, excited and happy with the sound of the crunch and YES, it is crunchy! It has a pungent taste similar to Chinese egg cake 鸡蛋糕. However, it leaves an after taste (if eating the waffle on its on) which can be covered by the fresh fruits, vanilla ice cream and drizzles of caramel sauce.

IMG_7333

Tossed Mixed Salad (RM6.90)

A typical salad with rather good portion of varieties. It’s served with lettuce, cherry tomato, capsicum, croutons, onions, and sprinkles of cheese powder. There is no need to mix the vegetables as its name says it all, tossed-mixed-salad, it is has been tossed mixed for you. Anyway, there is no space for you to tossed mixed it.

IMG_7331-2

Chicken Bolognese (RM7.90)

Minced chicken in bolognese sauced cooked with spaghetti and topped with cheese powder and parsley. I liked that the sauce is not too overwhelming with thickness nor too disappointing with watery sauce. It was good enough for me to finish to the last bits.

IMG_7332-0

Vegetarino Creamy (RM7.90)

Tried the red, try the white! This dish’s name got me tongue twisted. Simple creamy mushroom spaghetti with the sprinkles of cheese powder and parsley. Nothing fancy but has an appetising taste. Not like some creamy spaghetti which gives you the “I had enough” feeling. This is one that I do not mind going back for.

IMG_7334-0

Midnight Chocolate (RM11.90)

The cakes in the chiller are not in the best attracting display but it does contains moisture of cakes. Unable to see clearly of each cakes outlook and texture, I went for the safest flavour. A typical chocolate Mille crepe. Fortunately this cake did not pull my midnight gloom out on a bright day. *Haha, trying hard to blend cake’s name with my descriptions.* The happiest thing to happen when you eat mille crepe is that it cuts easily with your fork and does not collapse easily. Tick-tick, woohoo!

Organic Express Restaurant, SS2 Petaling Jaya

This may be another vegetarian outlet near your home. A place I visit now and then. It can be quite busy during lunch and dinner peak period.

You can either order for vegetable dishes to share or individual portions. They order a rather wide range of dishes to choose from Western styled salad, pizza, pasta to Asian styled stir fry vegetables, tofu, mushrooms and noodle and rice.

Some choices we ordered:

IMG_5478.JPG

Petai Fried Rice (RM12.90)

Fragrantly stir fried rice with petai and other vegetable ingredients, topped with slices of lettuce and accompanied with bean cracker and satay. I liked the taste of the fried rice. The satay tasted like popcorn chicken (if you have tasted a real one, you’ll understand what I mean).

IMG_5480.JPG

Hin Hua Mee Swa with Ginger Soup (RM12.90)

Cooked Mee Swa (Hokkien word for a type of vermicelli) poured over with ginger soup together with varieties of vegetables such as tomato, leafy greens and dried beancurd slices. The soup has a strong ginger taste which will be loved by ginger lovers. A warming dish.

IMG_5481.JPG

Basil Fried Beehoon (RM12.90)

It’s stir fried meehoon with spinach, cabbage, tofu, carrot strips, bean sprout and accompanied by bean cracker and satay. Looks like a normal dish of fried meehoon but it has a strong basil taste. If you like basil, it is a fragrant dish!

IMG_5482.JPG

Yunnan Style Fried Vermicelli (RM12.90)

From the looks of it, it looks similar to Basil Fried Meehoon. The ingredients are similar as well excluding the basil. I do not know how Yunnan fried meehoon taste like but to me it taste like a more fragrant Singapore fried meehoon. It’s good enough for my taste.

IMG_5483.JPG

Stir Fry Lotus Root with Mix Vegetables (RM15.90)

More vegetables to add more fibre to our diet. Crunchy lotus root and green pea with brocoli, cauliflower, carrot, black fungus and mushroom as the ingredients. However, I think that it’s a little salty to eat it on its own. Best to eat with rice or noodle.

(Closed) The Friend’s Park Cafe, Bandar Mahkota Cheras

IMG_3609

First try at the Friend’s Park Cafe. Initial impression of this place from the shopfront wasn’t great but thought to try. Its decoration and settings aren’t all fanciful but comfortable enough for me. They have quite a range of food from western to local cuisine. To choose without thinking much, we tried their lunch set for RM9.90.

Stir-fry noodle mix and fried rice

Their big portion surprised me and the taste, it’s quite nice for my taste. If you’re looking for the “wok fire” taste, it’s not there yet but it is quite well served with many ingredients. For the price, I’m not complaining. I will come back for more!

The set comes with a cup of iced drink (with few choices such as iced lemon tea, iced green tea) and a scoop of ice cream (either strawberry or yam).

Restaurant Tom Yam, Serendah

20140504-193146.jpg

I was being brought to this place where it’s known as Serendah Tom Yam or Serendah 桥头 Tom Yam (桥头 = bridgehead). The place itself does not have a signboard. It’s kitchen is right in front of the restaurant while the outdoor seatings are at the side.

It was up to my friend to recommend the dishes with just very simple names with a delicious complex taste.

20140504-193152.jpg

Six-taste soup 六味汤
On a hot sunny day, let’s start with a refreshing six-taste soup. It can have it hot or cold. It’s a bowl of black grass jelly, with syrup jelly, and cendol (for those I can see). A nice bowl of herbal soup that is not very herbal-ish. I don’t think it’s meant to taste herbal-ish, though.

20140504-193158.jpg

Tom yam
The famous dish of the day, Tom Yam. It’s a spicy tomyam but not spicy enough for some of my friends (that depends on your spiciness tolerance level) and it’s not the sour-ish type. It’s still good with rice. It’s cooked with 2 types of squid (white and brown), prawns, and some chicken meats.

20140504-193204.jpg

Foo Yong Egg 芙蓉蛋
Don’t let the plain old brownish fried egg fool you. It’s the brownish parts that makes it’s fragrantly delicious with a generous amount of sliced onions. I love the crispy sides.

20140504-193227.jpg

Fried chicken
This chicken is a quick snatch among us. Don’t be intimidated by the burned sides. It’s taste is well marinated and fried to a nice fragrant. The texture is not hard, although it looks so. This is like Chinese popcorn chicken. Once you pop, you can’t stop.

20140504-193233.jpg

Fried fish
The crispy top with a soft and tender meat inside, topped with some minced sauce. The minced sauce has a sweet and herbs taste that goes well with the fish or your plain rice. I enjoyed nibbling through the side fins as you can still get the sauce taste after most of it has gone once you flip over the fish.

20140504-193219.jpg

Stir-fried kangkung
Stir-fried kangkung at the right texture that is still crunchy. It’s cooked with garlic and dried shrimps. Nice!

For all these, it costs about RM100.

Teng Wun Bakery & Confectionery, Kuala Kubu Bharu

20140504-193017.jpg

When you’re at Kuala Kubu Bharu or even just pass-by, drop-by this bakery shop. It has delicious Durian cake and Kaya puff. The other pastries that they also sell are butter sponge cake, egg battered cake, egg tart, peanut cake, kaya roll, and wedding biscuits.

20140504-193030.jpg20140504-193039.jpg

We came for the Durian cake and Kaya puff.

Durian cake is cream and flower decorated covered over sliced sponge cake with durian paste. The durian taste is so pungent and tasty (especially for durian lover, like me). You will need to pre-order in advance as you can’t get any if you walk in. It comes in 2 sizes, 0.5kg for RM28 and 1kg for RM56.

Kaya puff has a crunchy and fragrant skin over a nice kaya. Careful with the flakes from the skin. It would be best taken warm. It’s RM1.20 per piece.

Butter sponge cake does not have a heavy buttery taste that you can get from those condensed butter cake. This is a soft sponge cake with that you can add with jam or any other toppings you like. I love the burned top that gives a nice smell to it. It’s RM9.00 for a cake.
