This may be another vegetarian outlet near your home. A place I visit now and then. It can be quite busy during lunch and dinner peak period.
You can either order for vegetable dishes to share or individual portions. They order a rather wide range of dishes to choose from Western styled salad, pizza, pasta to Asian styled stir fry vegetables, tofu, mushrooms and noodle and rice.
Some choices we ordered:
Petai Fried Rice (RM12.90)
Fragrantly stir fried rice with petai and other vegetable ingredients, topped with slices of lettuce and accompanied with bean cracker and satay. I liked the taste of the fried rice. The satay tasted like popcorn chicken (if you have tasted a real one, you’ll understand what I mean).
Hin Hua Mee Swa with Ginger Soup (RM12.90)
Cooked Mee Swa (Hokkien word for a type of vermicelli) poured over with ginger soup together with varieties of vegetables such as tomato, leafy greens and dried beancurd slices. The soup has a strong ginger taste which will be loved by ginger lovers. A warming dish.
Basil Fried Beehoon (RM12.90)
It’s stir fried meehoon with spinach, cabbage, tofu, carrot strips, bean sprout and accompanied by bean cracker and satay. Looks like a normal dish of fried meehoon but it has a strong basil taste. If you like basil, it is a fragrant dish!
Yunnan Style Fried Vermicelli (RM12.90)
From the looks of it, it looks similar to Basil Fried Meehoon. The ingredients are similar as well excluding the basil. I do not know how Yunnan fried meehoon taste like but to me it taste like a more fragrant Singapore fried meehoon. It’s good enough for my taste.
Stir Fry Lotus Root with Mix Vegetables (RM15.90)
More vegetables to add more fibre to our diet. Crunchy lotus root and green pea with brocoli, cauliflower, carrot, black fungus and mushroom as the ingredients. However, I think that it’s a little salty to eat it on its own. Best to eat with rice or noodle.
Food is one of the attractions in Kuching where some of its unique taste could not be found in Peninsular Malaysia. The main dishes that you can find it almost everywhere is Kolo Mee and Sarawak Laksa with each stalls special taste. It’s all up to your taste bud on which is the one you like best.
Here are some of the stalls that we tried and some other food. Price range per bowl is about RM3.50 to RM5. The price can go up to RM10 and more depending on any request for additional ingredients to be added such as big prawns, clams, etc.
Seng Kee Coffee Stall
This shop is located at Carpenter Street, also known as Chinatown. Beside this shop is a sheltered area with a Chinese theater stage. It seems like every food at this shop is recommended to try.
Curly yellow noodle topped with pork slices, fish cake, char siew, minced pork and pork liver. Full of ingredients but what you can’t see from the photo the taste that put this noodle to a more preferred taste that is pork lard. Remember to put in the vinegar that comes with the sliced chilli. It’s not soya sauce.
I’m a person who can’t take too spicy laksa and also love sourish stuff. So, I like this laksa. Add in the chilli (nice) and lime, it becomes a taste full of spices with less santan and sourish. Sarawak laksa usually serve with meehoon. This bowl tops with prawn, chicken slices, bean sprouts, egg slices and some raw vegetables. I’m sorry I don’t know the name of the raw vegetable.
Pork Satay (Available only from around 2pm to sold out)
When most of the satay stalls you can’t get pork, as a Chinese who eats pork, it tends be an attraction. Each satay stick is RM0.60 but with a minimum purchase of 5 sticks (RM3). It’s meat is tender and juicy, plus its satay sauce is not spicy for me but has a nice peanut and chilli taste.
If all the above food are too “heavy” for you, you can try the fishball noodle soup. It’s glass noodle topped with fishballs and Yeong tau foo 釀豆腐. The clear soup is lightly taste but good enough to finish it. Rather tasty.
Teh C Special and Bakolong juice
The C Special or 3 layer milk tea 三色奶茶 is one of specialty drink in Kuching. It contains tea, evaporated milk and brown sugar. Bakolong juice is refreshing fruit drink. At Peninsular Malaysia, we call this Buah Long Long. You can get the peeled fruit only at the fruit stall next to Seng Kee Coffee Stall but it’s limited per day.
Another food to try here but we did not is Kway Chap, braised or stewed pork meat and internal organs. This is also recommended by some friends.

Operating hours: opens for breakfast to dinner, each food stalls has its own operating hours. Most of them opens for lunch.
Black Bean Coffee and Tea company
This is one of the famous places to have coffee. They have different types of Arabica and Robusta beans but being in Sarawak, we tried the Sarawak Liberica bean. We ordered the cappuccino which is nice without a strong aftertaste and is served with a piece of butter cookie. If you are the strong “kao” coffee lover, you will need to ask them make you something strong.
This is a hawker centre that serves many different types of food and drinks. Here are some specialties that we tried.
Gong Pia 光饼
A Fuzhou dish of small rounded donut topped with sesame with fillings of your choice. The original filling is minced pork, while choices can be garlic, ham or cheese. Sold by stall No.7 Rihga 麗佳.
Belacan Bee Hoon
This is an interesting dish that I’ve not tried before. There are 2 stalls that sell this but we randomly tried Stall No.26 Padungan Belachan Bee Hoon. It’s bee hoon in belacan and prawn paste gravy topped with squid, cucumber slices, bean sprout and sweet chilli sauce. Unfortunately, we didn’t like the taste as it has a distinctive fishy taste. I’m not sure from the prawn or the squid. We added few rounds of sweet chilli sauce so that it’s spicy enough to cover the taste. Sorry, not a taste we can adapt.
Tomato Crispy Noodle
Deep fried noodle with tomato gravy topped with fish cake and char siew (pork). I like the crispiness of the noodle but the gravy is a little salty. As we tried both belacan bee hoon and tomato crispy noodle at the same time, we built a preference over the tomato crispy noodle.

Sin Hwa Yen Café backlane
After around 6.00pm, we went to the backdoor of Sin Hwa Yen Café for kolo mee. You can either sit at the footpath or inside the shop where you enter from the back door. This time we ordered the thick noodle instead and it’s topped with soya sauced minced pork, wanton and char siew (pork). It doesn’t have the strong pork lard taste which we didn’t mind but we think that it was wrong to have chosen the thick noodle as it made it less different from a normal dry noodle that we can get from Peninsular Malaysia. Still, we enjoyed it. We saw that at this stall you can request for broiled pork meat to be added which we found out only after we finished our noodle.

Another food location for night “cats” behind Tune Hotel. The Sarawak laksa with a heavier santan (coconut milk) taste. Yet, it was still better than many that you can get in KL.

I got this problem with my Jawbone UP24 but I could not go to any retailer as it was a gift purchased in US while I’m currently located in Singapore. So, this is what I did and you can do as well.

Here are some quick troubleshooting steps that were suggested to test to know if they can fix your problem.
Troubleshoot steps 1 – Reinstall
1. Make sure that your device is connected to a network.
2. Restart your iOS device (just power it off, and then back on).
3. Quit out of all open apps, including UP.
If you’re using iOS 7:
– Double click the Home button to bring up your app cards, then swipe up on each app to force quit.
If you’re using a previous version of iOS:
-Double click your Home button to bring open the tray of all running apps.
-Press and hold on each app icon until red minus signs appear.
-Tap each red minus button to close each app.
4. Turn Bluetooth on your device off and back on.
5. Reopen the UP app. Syncing should start automatically. If it does not, press the mode button on your band to initiate a manual sync.
6. If you’re still having trouble syncing, we can try uninstalling and reinstalling the UP app. (This won’t erase any data!) To uninstall, tap and hold on any app icon until the apps start wiggling. Then, tap the X button that appears on your UP app. To reinstall, head back to the app store, search for UP by Jawbone, and download.
After you’ve reinstalled UP on your device, you’ll sign in using the email associated with your UP account. Once you’re on the home screen of the app, click Add a new band to pair with your UP24.
7. You can also try to sync your band on a friend’s device – just make sure you log in using your own UP account first! This will help us better isolate the issue, and confirm if the band can no longer sync, or if there’s a factor on the secondary device contributing to the difficulties.
8. It’s also important to make sure your band is up to date with the latest firmware, as firmware updates will often resolve a variety of issues. Please check for any available updates at www.jawbone.com/up/updater and, if applicable, follow the steps to update.
9. PLEASE NOTE: once the update completes, allow the band to charge fully until the Sun status light glows solidly, and then sync the band to your phone before removing UP24 from the charger.
If all else fails, continue to the next troubleshoot step…
Troubleshoot step 2 – Soft reset
1. Start with the UP connected to the charger, but DON’T connect the charger to a power source.
2. PRESS + HOLD the button on your UP as you plug the charger into the USB port on a well-powered computer.
3. Release the button on your UP. You will see the Sun and Moon status lights cycle back and forth, and then the Sun will begin to slowly pulse, indicating that the band is charging normally.
4. Allow the band to charge for approximately 80 minutes, until the Sun status light changes to a solid light.
5. Remove the UP from the charger – you’ll see both lights flash once off the charger.
6. Launch the UP app. Allow it to fully open, then plug in your band. The sync will start automatically. (If you’re using an iOS device or UP on an Android device, swipe to the right menu screen and touch Sync Now; if you’re using an Android device with UP24, press the mode button on your band to initial a manual sync.)
7. When pairing your band, make sure you are at least 33 feet away from any other Bluetooth device, otherwise your band will try to pair to it. Once the app finds the band then just tap the button very gently to pair.
8. If the band still does not pair then try deleting the app, power cycling the phone and re-installing the app.
9. Force close the UP app ( press the home button on your iPhone twice, a list of running apps will appear, please swipe all the apps upward towards the top of the screen to close them.
10. Power cycle your iPhone ( Press and hold the power button and the home button on the phone, keep holding them till the phone powers off, ignore the swipe to power off prompt.
11. Turn the phone back on, and re-install the UP app.
12. Sign In to the UP app.
13. Once you’re on the home screen of the app, click Add a new band to pair your UP24.
14. On the next screen, you will see Wake Up the Band. Press the button. Then click on Next.
15. On the next screen, you will see “Looking for Band”. Then, once your band is detected, you should see “Found it”.
16. As soon as you see “Press to Pair”, VERY GENTLY tap the button.
If this fails as well, the support staff will look into a warranty exchange for you to be done at your local retailers. However, I went to one of the retailer and was advised to go to the main distributor.

You do not need to make any appointment before heading down but you may want to check with them if they have the size and colour that you want. Initially, I was told that they only had black but subsequently got me the same colour as my original orange unit. My unit was certified dead. So, I got my warranty exchange within half hour.

The second morning waking up to an orchestral alarm clock of many roosters’ crow was actually funny to me. I tried recording the sound but it’s not clear, otherwise it will definitely be my morning alarm.
The villagers’ morning started similar to the day before with repairing fishing nets, weaving, beading, washing clothes, cleaning up visitors’ room after they left.
Our last breakfast at the longhouse was simple Sedap instant noodle with hard boiled eggs. Happy and full tummy!
Before leaving the village, our guide showed us a demonstration of how to use a blowpipe, a traditional weapon for hunting. We got the chance to try it out as well. The blowpipe is made of a type of thick wood where a hole is manually drilled in the centre. the centre hole will be to be straight otherwise the making process will need to start all over again. It was very heavy weapon with a knife tied on the end of the blowpipe. Not only the blowpipe was heavy, I also didn’t have enough air to shoot at the target. 2 trials, failed.
We then continued our more than 4 hours journey through the boat and car with a stop by at Serian for lunch. We managed to reached Kuching earlier than then expected with more time to rest and walk around Kuching town. It was a good experience with great hospitality by the host family and our guide, Nixon. A very big thank you to them!

I have expected to hear nature’s morning alarm clock, the roosters’ crow but it wasn’t how I expected it to be. It started from about 3-4am with only a few mild crows. So, we could still sleep back. At about 5.30am, never did I expect to hear the whole village’s roosters (sounded like there were 1,000 of them) to crow continuously to each other at the highest pitch possible and it lasted to about 6-7am. You will be wide awake by then unless you have ear plugs.
At early morning, many villagers start their work on farming, making new fishing nets or repair fishing nets, weaving fans and beading. It was also a Sunday where we see many mothers prepared their kids to be sent off to school. Primary school is not too far from the Batang Ai jetty but secondary school is further away. The kids will stay at the hostel during weekdays and only return home during weekends or school holidays.
We had simple breakfast of bread and egg, coffee or tea, full enough but not too much before our trekking to the waterfall. You can either wear a pair of good grip sandals or kampung “adidas” because we crossed the river most of the time. What is kampung “adidas”? Click here for more information. It was about 1.5 – 2 hours trekking through a few different terrain, through tall grass or bushes, dried logged area and mostly rocky or sandy rivers. The day was rather hot but then cooled down during the river walk.
We passed by many plantations such as pineapple, hill paddy, pepper, lime, and different type of ferns where the guide stop to explain what some of it are used by the villagers. For example, pineapple leaves used to make clothes, certain type of ferns are used to bracelet and some branches can be burned as air freshener.
Upon arriving at Trabong waterfall, the villagers start to prepare our lunch with natural tools such as branches, wood, leaves and bamboo but also with a little help of modern equipment of the pot and grille. It was interesting to see how certain bamboo, trees, branches and leaves are selected and what they are made to be.
We see the use of bamboo to cook chicken in bamboo, bamboo shoots are collected for our dinner, tree branches are used as support for the pot and grille, and peeled branches as chopping board, and leaves as plate. A few forest survival lessons in the pocket.
While taking a rest from the trek, our guide shared with us Buah Rambai, which tasted like Duku Langsat but juicer and sweeter. Delicious! While our lunch was being prepared, we went for a dip at the waterfall, a soothing way to relax.
We had one of the most famous Iban food – chicken in the bamboo, accompanying with barbecue pork with paddy rice. The chicken is also tasty but I love more of the gravy from the bamboo chicken that is nice to drink or put over the rice. Tender barbecue pork but quite a lot of fats but no worries, it doesn’t taste like fat at all. There is also chilli sauce for the barbecue pork. It’s very spicy but very delicious. The villagers also brought along a bottle of local whiskey. Whiskey at lunch? *oo ha* ^_^
We walked back to the longhouse after our lunch. We were told that the longhouse is usually very hot at mid-day, so they bring visitors out. As we returned a little earlier, we experienced the heat of the longhouse. We continue to help ourselves looking around and rest until dinner time.
At dinner, we were served with catfish in gravy, stir-fry Paku vege, stir-fry meat with vege, stir-fry bamboo shoot and fried fish. We were very appreciative to have our guide, who cooked us some special dishes. We were also privileged to tried fresh bamboo shoot pick from afternoon and fresh fish caught by the villagers. Another delicious meal.
There were other visitors who just arrived that evening. So, we watched another round of Ngajat dance before we end the night at the longhouse. *oo ha*
