Restaurant Tom Yam, Serendah

I was being brought to this place where it’s known as Serendah Tom Yam or Serendah 桥头 Tom Yam (桥头 = bridgehead). The place itself does not have a signboard. It’s kitchen is right in front of the restaurant while the outdoor seatings are at the side.

It was up to my friend to recommend the dishes with just very simple names with a delicious complex taste.

Six-taste soup 六味汤
On a hot sunny day, let’s start with a refreshing six-taste soup. It can have it hot or cold. It’s a bowl of black grass jelly, with syrup jelly, and cendol (for those I can see). A nice bowl of herbal soup that is not very herbal-ish. I don’t think it’s meant to taste herbal-ish, though.

Tom yam
The famous dish of the day, Tom Yam. It’s a spicy tomyam but not spicy enough for some of my friends (that depends on your spiciness tolerance level) and it’s not the sour-ish type. It’s still good with rice. It’s cooked with 2 types of squid (white and brown), prawns, and some chicken meats.

Foo Yong Egg 芙蓉蛋
Don’t let the plain old brownish fried egg fool you. It’s the brownish parts that makes it’s fragrantly delicious with a generous amount of sliced onions. I love the crispy sides.

Fried chicken
This chicken is a quick snatch among us. Don’t be intimidated by the burned sides. It’s taste is well marinated and fried to a nice fragrant. The texture is not hard, although it looks so. This is like Chinese popcorn chicken. Once you pop, you can’t stop.

Fried fish
The crispy top with a soft and tender meat inside, topped with some minced sauce. The minced sauce has a sweet and herbs taste that goes well with the fish or your plain rice. I enjoyed nibbling through the side fins as you can still get the sauce taste after most of it has gone once you flip over the fish.

Stir-fried kangkung
Stir-fried kangkung at the right texture that is still crunchy. It’s cooked with garlic and dried shrimps. Nice!

For all these, it costs about RM100.
