Differences: Alishan Fencihu ginger tea vs Black Gold Legend ginger tea

There are many brands selling around Taiwan. Some sells only the original and some sells it with various flavours. For this time, I have tried this. How is it different from the more famous brand, Black Gold Legend?

At first look, they are both main in Taiwan. From the main ingredients of ginger 老薑 and brown sugar 黑糖, Fencihu’s (left) ginger is from Taiwan but sugar is from Okinawa, Japan and Black Gold Legend’s (right) both ingredients are from Taiwan.

Inside the pack, both cube sizes are different. Fencihu (left) ginger tea cubes are cut in different sizes with recommended water required is about 400-600cc. So, sometimes it’s rather hard to estimate the amount of water you need for the size that you took. So, you can start with less water and then add more to your taste. Something you need to adjust everytime. As for Black Gold Legend (right), they are additionally packed into small cubes of the same size with recommended water required is about 400cc. You can get back to about the same taste each time.

After making both into drinks, they look the same – Black.

Taste – different. I didn’t previously like anything with ginger but Black Gold Legend helped me adapted to the taste because it has the taste of the brown sugar and spiciness of the ginger. I don’t taste the ginger more than the sweetness of the sugar but still spicy. It contains many small little pieces of ginger that you can eat if you want.

When I first tried Fencihu, it tasted different. Then, I soon realised that they blended the ginger and mixed it with the brown sugar. So, you will taste more of the blended ginger than the sweetness. You will need to stir your cup everytime before you drink. Otherwise, you will feel like you are drinking blended ginger rather than a normal drink at the end. As such, you only get 2-3 thin slices of ginger left in your cup.

My personal preference: Black Gold Legend.

For a not-s0-big-fan-of-ginger person and for the goodness of ginger, I prefer the Black Gold Legend because it does not have the blended ginger taste and it’s convenient to carry around 1-2 pieces when I travel.

Oh well, like all food and drinks, you will need to try it to know your preference. Enjoy!

Alishan Fencihu Ginger Tea 大阿里山 奮起湖 黑糖之老薑

20140412-183730.jpg

A trip to Taiwan gave me the opportunity to tried another brand’s ginger tea, Alishan Fencihu 大阿里山 奮起湖. This ginger tea is packet in turquoise plastic bag at a cost of TWD500 for 3 packs. Our tour guide helped us to get it when we were at the Fencihu area. I am not sure if it can be purchased around Taipei City area.

Its main ingredients are ginger and brown sugar from Taiwan and Japan, respectively. It tastes like blended ginger mixed in born sugar, leaving a few thin slices of ginger to eat.

Kiat Lim Vegetarian Food, Kallang

I was being introduced to this place recently, hearing good comments of food here.

20140412-134109.jpg

It is located beside a famous Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee. From the first look, comparing to the neighbour, the shop looks quiet, with only 1 customer inside when we entered. We were welcomed by a straight looking uncle but soon become very jovial and friendly.

Wolfberry soup (SGD4.00 for small)
This soup gave us a big question mark. Where is the wolfberry? You don’t see it but the soup is sweet with it, cooking with very fresh and sweet vegetables, corn, tomato and fried beancurd slices. The small portion is enough to share for 2.

20140412-134124.jpg

Fried mee sua (SGD4.50 for small)
I like this dish. It’s mee sua is just right with tasty sauce, stir-fried with at least 4 types of vegetables. The taste became more refreshing with a squeeze of lime juice.

Vegetables with Bailin (SGD10.00 for small)
Bailin mushroom presented with Chinese cabbage, wolfberries and moss. Looking at the soup and then to this dish, had the wolfberries came here instead? ^_^ The mushroom is sliced very thinly making easy to eat. The Chinese cabbage is fresh and crunchy. The sauce is also nice to pour over some rice.

Loving Heart Vegetarian Restaurant, Bandar Mahkota Cheras

There are many vegetarian restaurants around Bandar Mahkota Cheras. This time let’s try this one!

This shop is located opposite Aeon, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, with a green decoration inside the shop presenting a green living environment. It’s a colour comfortable to the eyes.

Veggie Bak Kut Tea (RM11.00)
A warm herbal soup that keeps you warm especially during rainy days. The bak kut teh soup is cooked with beancurd slices, mushrooms, toupok, and vegetarian pork. The vegetarian pork has a nice chew to it, a little like the real pork. The soup is also accompanied by a plate of lettuce and slices of you tiao and a bowl of rice.

Chuk San Wan Yee Soup 竹生云耳汤 (RM12.00)
The main ingredient of this soup is black fungus, together with many other ingredients such as carrots, wolfberries, and vegetarian fishball. A hot and filling soup to the tummy.

Hokkien fried hakka noodle (RM8.50)

Padi House, Bandar Mahkota Cheras

A recent new restaurant open at Bandar Mahkota Cheras. Had my first try, although they already have many outlets around such as Setia Walk, Sri Petaling, and Putrajaya.

20140411-081732.jpg

“Padi” means rice in Malay which gave me the first thought that they should be selling local cuisine. To my surprise they even sell pasta, western, cakes and cookies.

20140406-102516.jpg

It is a corner shop along with Pappa Rich and next to Nando’s but it’s easily noticeable. It has ample parking space in the front and side of the shop as this area is rather new.

20140412-165201.jpg

A 2 level shop renovated to a comfortable ambience for gatherings, family meals or just chill our for some coffee and desserts. It is was a busy Saturday on the day we went but managed to get a table.

20140406-102526.jpg

What most attracted me was the various cakes presented at the chiller near the entrance. Some of the choices are Vanilla cheesecake, Oreo cheesecake, Macadamia cheesecake, Choc moist and many more. They sell in mini square or round cake, slices from a whole and whole cake.

Now, to the food…

20140406-102452.jpg

Cheese baked vegetarian pasta (RM13.90)
Spaghetti cooked with mushroom, long bean, carrot, cauliflower topped with cheese. I love the tomato based sauce that is quite concentrated but salty. It tasted little like the Prego brand traditional Italian tomato sauce. I’m not sure though how Padi made or what brand they use for the sauce.

20140406-102440.jpg

Caesar Salad (RM9.50)
A typical caesar salad of lettuce, egg, croutons, cheese flakes with salad dressing. Fresh and crunchy lettuce and croutons but don’t leave the croutons too long, it goes soft.

20140406-102428.jpg

Macadamia Cheese (RM11.50)
A original cheesecake topped with macadamia nuts and glaze. The combination is delicious. If you happily finish the macadamia first, you will feel that the cheesecake is just normal and plain. The cheesecake is not too sweet for my liking.

20140406-102409.jpg

They currently have this deal of getting a 50% discount on Cappuccino, Cafe Latte or Green Tea Latter with a purchase of every cheesecake.
